“The father of the 15-year-old girl who accused four Immokalee football players of raping her last week, said he is unhappy with the way school officials and law enforcement have handled the case, and believes his daughter is getting a bad rap in the media.
“They’re trying to make my daughter out like she’s a whore,” he said. “She’s not. Hell no she’s not.”
The girl, whose name is not being released due to her age and the sexual nature of the case, accused four star football players of raping her next to a portable classroom on Oct. 15, across campus from where a junior varsity football game was being played. Collier County sheriff’s investigators said she later admitted that she agreed to the sex.
That’s not true, the girl’s father, whose name is also being withheld to protect his daughter’s identity, said.
“How do I know that? Because my daughter told me that,” he said. “It’s my daughter. I believe what my daughter tells me.”
Kovan McSwain, Joshua Edison, Deonte Clifton, and Demandrea Fuller, all 17, were each charged with lewd and lascivious battery — sexual act with a person 12 to 15 years old. They are being held in the Collier County juvenile detention center.
The girl’s father said his daughter was raped and agreed to nothing. She is an innocent victim, he said.
“They’re making it out like it was consensual, but it was not,” the father said.
However, over at the Collier County jail, 18-year-old Tyrone Fuller has a different take on the 15-year-old.
“She’s a trouble-maker,” he said.
Tyrone Fuller, who is the cousin of Demandrea Fuller and described Edison as his “homeboy,” was arrested on Sept. 2 on a lewd and lascivious battery charge, and for violating an injunction after authorities say he had sex with the girl. After the 15-year-old left the home where the encounter occurred, reports say she returned home and told her father about the sex.
Tyrone Fuller denies ever having sex with the girl. He said that at the time the girl was dating another boy, and that her father thought it was him.
“Her dad is getting mad because he can’t control his daughter,” Fuller said.
During a jail interview with a Daily News reporter, Tyrone Fuller held up to the video visitation monitor a letter that he said was from the 15-year-old apologizing for sending him to jail. In the letter, the girl allegedly wrote that her father was trying to put Fuller “behind bars.”
Tyrone Fuller said he’s fought with the girl’s father in the past.
The 15-year-old’s father declined to discuss Tyrone Fuller at length, but said he believes Fuller put the four football players up to last week’s attack.
The father said his daughter is in counseling and he pulled her out of school after threats were made against her.
Putting four star football players in jail made a lot of people mad, he said. The father said he “doesn’t think much” of the four football players.
“I’ve got no use for them, to be honest with you,” the father said. “It seems like everybody’s more worried about these boys than the one that was assaulted.”
The community’s reaction would have been different if four white boys had attacked a black girl, said the father, whose daughter is white. The four juveniles who were arrested were all black.
“I say that because that’s the way I feel,” the father said. “The white people in Immokalee are nothing but a minority to begin with.”
Tyrone Fuller said the 15-year-old is no victim. She has a fake ID that says she’s 18, and “has sex with a whole bunch of people,” he said. The girl’s family “treats her like a dog,” he said.
After what happened to him, the four football players should have known better, Tyrone Fuller said. But the 15-year-old should “get in trouble, too,” he said.
“She needs all the help she can get,” Fuller said of the girl. “She’s messing up my life and the rest of the boys’ lives.””
